Interested in affordable volunteering in Africa? Volunteer With Let Us Shine!
In the last few years there has been an increased demand of people wanting to visit our projects. Since 2006 we have had volunteers of all ages and abilities out to see what we are doing in Ghana. From 12yrs to 69 yrs, our volunteers have visited from 10 days to 3 months and have contibuted to everything from story telling to painting to farming. We are thrilled for people to come and see what we are doing. Our wonderful staff look after you and show you the real Africa, experiencing local cultures and customs and becoming part of our ever growing family. Staff, pupils and volunteers live on our 15 acre plot of land where we have our school, boarding accommodation, kitchen and dining area, sports field and eco farm.
Why Volunteer with Let Us Shine?
Make a difference to the lives of underprivileged children, who are always eager to learn. Students and graduates from a number of universities across the UK have found volunteering with Let Us Shine to be an invaluable experience, particularly those interested in pursuing a career in education, social welfare or international development.
Volunteers are absolutely essential to the running of Let Us Shine. We are always looking for new methods and ideas to improve our school: whether it’s different approaches to teaching, afterschool activities such as painting and storytelling, or contribution to building work and farming, your help is invaluable. In return, we strive to make sure you have the best possible volunteer experience. The success of our volunteer programme is evidenced by the fact that many volunteers have made return visits (up to 5!) and have become key fundraisers for the charity in their spare time.
Who can volunteer?
Anyone! We have had fully qualified teachers, students and non-teaching career breakers out contributing to the standard of teaching in our school. Our volunteers can teach individual lessons, assist the local teachers, hold after school homework clubs, assist in library time, and teach specialised classes on art, drama, music or sports. Whether you have confidence to teach yourself or are happy just lending a hand the school has something for everyone and our girls will make sure you never forget the experience.
If you come from a medical background or are interested in a medical career, we work hand in hand with Kpandai clinic where Dr Timothy is always delighted to have visitors or volunteers help out. With a male, female, childrens and labour ward with outpatient facilities there is always something to see. Rural clinics in Ghana are often understaffed and under equipped so we make an effort on each visit to bring out what we can to help the clinic. In our own school we have built our own dispensary and keep a good supply of medicines the girls are likely to need should they become unwell. Our past medical volunteers have helped with healthcare awareness training by teaching our pupils about preventing malaria, treatment of diarrhoea, dental hygiene, hand washing procedures, treatment of insect bites and much more.
Other activities you can get involved in are building work, basic farming, an introduction to african cooking, sports coaching, music and drama and much more. Come and see why Ghana is one of the safest countries in Africa and Ghanaians are known as the friendliest race. Please dont take our word for it, click on the stories below to read about what some of our past volunteers have thought of their experiences.
